LiveWire Innovation's unique and patented core technology is called Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry, or SSTDR. Spread spectrum is the technological foundation of cell phone communications, and is used to transmit a small, but nevertheless recognizable signal in a high noise environment.

What is TDR?

By combining spread spectrum with TDR technology, LiveWire has achieved a significant breakthrough in being able to monitor real-time changes in live electrical circuits and steel structures embedded in concrete.

TDR, or Time Domain Reflectometery, is a method of measuring characteristics of electrical lines. A time-domain reflectometer instrument is used to locate the electrical faults in metallic cables, and these specific cable testers find an intermittent fault within an electrical path. Time Domain Reflectometery provides the basis for the technology needed to detect electrical faults within cables when an electrical current is not live.

This break-through technology allows for easier and quicker detection of an intermittent fault.

What is SSTDR?

SSTDRLiveWire’s Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry technology reduces maintenance, troubleshooting, and/or monitoring costs, increases system reliability, and can extend the useful life of systems and structures by providing accurate monitoring of system health environments. Before SSTDR technology, Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) methods were not able to locate the tiny intermittent faults left after an arc fault event because the impedance discontinuity was too small to create a measurable reflection. LiveWire recognized this lapse in technology and determined that if an electrical fault could be found during the few milliseconds the arc occurs, it would be an actual short circuit which returns plenty of reflected power! This is the concept that led to the development of Spread Spectrum Time Domain Reflectometry (SSTDR) at LiveWire Innovation.
